Preamble: All other clues consist of two cryptic clues, side by
side. The two solutions they generate are to be
entered side by side in the grid but cyclically,
starting anywhere in the designated space. The
required starting points will be confirmed by
crossing letters and by the fact that, in the 26
squares around the perimeter of the grid, all the
letters A to Z appear once.
I have finished most of this crossword, but am stuck on the last one and a half answers!
10A Dandy old man and home bird are, with learner, leaving one
country or another (8 and 7)
I have worked out half the answer, I think that the answer to the second half of the clue "are, with learner, leaving one country or another" is Austria (being Australia without the "al"), but where does the "are" in the clue come in - does the "a" stand for "are" and the "l" stand for "learner"?
13 Building's filled by worn-out luggage, itinerant sort welcoming
month in Paris etc (8 and 7)
The first answer looks like HOLDALL (Hall + old), but this is only 7 letters when it should be 8! As for the second part of the clue which I think is "itinerant sort welcoming month in Paris etc", I have no idea what this could be.
Please can anyone help?
Thanks everyone - that explains a lot. I still don't understand why Holdalls is plural as "building" in the clue is singular (apostrophe is before the s of buildings). Could this be a typo in the clue perhaps?
All the rest is great, thank you; I can go to bed now, long day tomorrow!!
Glad we could help. The clue has Building's and the answer includes Halls, both with an S, so I think it's fine. It's slightly sneaky, but I have seen similar things in crosswords before!
