But for the life of me I cant think of a reason where lag is a synonym for recalled!

Could recalled mean a word backward's so GAL if a word like girl is missing from clue?

Agree with 'Plage' & that lag/recalled doesn't seem to work.

If the clue read (eg) "Nice beach girl recalled during exercises", that would work.

The word “nice” doesn’t even mean “peace”, nor vice versa. So I agree “girl” has probably been omitted from the clue.
