The last clue is "He's connected with pop, in two ways". The answer is u?c?e which appears to be Uncle? Not sure I understand why?

Pop is a word meaning to pawn, pawnbroker is known as uncle

Thank you. I thought about the Pawnbroker connection, but wasn't sure because the local paper doesn't usually use "Pop" as the word for Father! Much appreciated.
