25a Nonsense about hire car one's kept driving ????E?T?A?
Looks as though it could be TORRENTIAL which would fit with Driving [rain] and contains RENT i.e. HIRE but I cannot work out where the nonsense or the car come in.

10a Fool about in small part of desert D?N?E. Dunce or Dense? Can't quite see either.

Thanks both. If we have Torrential settled then I have two more to get, both of which intersect with that.
21d Genuine playwright but not British ?C?T. All I can think of is Scot but then a Scot is British!
22d Short slope leading to cliff ?C?R makes me think it is Scar (Scarp minus the last letter) but why is a Scar a Cliff?
