Matakari, your 'research in the offing' is rather grand - there will be very little for you to do! And Pabulum's puzzles are always worth a bit of effort, I'm sure you'd have managed - and got the thrill, the satisfaction....
Agreed NACW. This is trademark Pabulum. I was very lucky with this one as It is a subject with which I am very familiar even down to what links the four. That is very cleverly indicated.
Sorry, and forgot to say that the 'sound of' is a sounds like, for the word meaning dated, went out with.... (It doesn't sound like it to me, but in crosswordland...)
