You need the partner to 'cannon' for the entry - and the partner to the philosopher/wig answer as the entry (cannon and s... are not entered in the grid, so ''amended'' in the preamble is a bit misleading).
I'm sure you'll know the partner for s... - even in America it's a pretty famous outlet - 'cannon' is part of a British comedy duo and you might struggle with that one.

The misprint is 'plaNs' - OR = 'before' (archaic) + 6 letters for big 'caddies'/boxes [around] 4 letters for 'fee'/price.
Whenever I see, ''a hint leading to...'' in a preamble, I'm pretty sure the real message is contained in some part of the clues themselves.
If you want to leap ahead with this one maybe take a look...

Just spotted this but if you're still looking -
4/21 the thematic one is 4 letters - anag of 'AND +E(arl)' [its partner goes in at 24a - at 21 you need the partner of one of the 8/29 thematics] the other answer is obscure but is written out in the clue's last words.
For 32 it's a 6 letter synonym for 'gains knowledge' minus first and last letters - def 'acquire' (by merit?).
14/30 'evergreen' + 'very hard water' are the defs, they're both normal answers and for the one you've given the letters for it's -
sounds like ''clues'' + i + a.
