Is This Peak Flow Reading Too Low?
3 Answers
Is this peak flow reading too low and why do I make this noise?
Female, 35 - PMH - chronic rhinitis/small grade nasal polyps managed by nasal steroids/antihistamine. (Allergy tests - a negative). Height -5ft 1
I tried to do peak flow today (we happen to have a meter in the house) but on my best effort I could only get 310.
The second thing is every time I do it (a fast breath into the metre) I make a loud barking sound and my lungs burn for a bit after.
I remember doing peak flow years ago and also not being able to get past 310 ish mark. I think that I also made the same loud noise. I am unable to do peak flow without making the noise unless I blow slower into it but I get an even lower reading.
I don’t have a diagnosis of asthma (my dad does). I don’t hear any wheezing or chest tightness at rest or when running (though occasionally others have said I wheeze when running)
I have a on and off feeling of air hunger for the past 2 months (it started after a mild case of covid) I have put it down to anxiety which I also have. My gp just said it was common after covid.
Do you think I should go back to my gp about the low peak flow reading and noise I make when exhaling into it? Even though I have always had a low reading/made a noise when completing it..

The noice is air being forced into your lung sacs and forcing them open...... a type of wheeze.
I suspect that you can run, walk, exercise without getting short of breath.
Diagnosis here is above my pay scale as you need to see a Respiratory Physician.
But it doesn't sound a big deal from your post.
