Defies belief. Some people never learn.
Question Author
It is unbelievable, Canary.
I've seen very shallow stretches of water that would be safe to venture onto when frozen, hopefully these folk know what they are doing but in light of recent events it looks quite alarming.
That’s basically natural selection.
The problem with ice on a lake is, if it's ten feet thick or half an inch thick, it looks exactly the same.

People always assume it's the first, and find out the hard way that it's the second.

People always think they know best, you can't tell them otherwise, they don't want to hear it.
Most people are aware and saddened by the deaths of the little boys. Anyone risking walking on frozen water so soon after such an events should be .....
What should we do to them? Prevent them from breeding sound like the only option.

From the article I applaud what the Cardiff authorities did in their effort to stop idiots walking onto frozen water.

wolf, given the supposed ages of 20 - 30 yrs old it may be too late for that. I do not worry for these idiots who definitely should have known better but I do care about what could happen to any rescue workers, let alone the cost involved. What an example for young children, sigh.
Naomi shakes head in despair.
MAABOF.
I saw the pictures and I just don't get it.
(Almost) unbelievable idiocy.
Some people don't watch the news. I tried speaking with someone the other day about the Solihull tragedy and was astonished that they'd not heard of it ...
There are lots of people who live in their own bubble who never read the news and are totally unaware of what goes on outside their own little world.
aye dave, and that's where daytime TV quizzes get their contestants, a broad expanse of shallowness.
Looking at the pictures it would look like one of those shallow duck ponds.

Still.
How do you judge it? There were frost fairs on the Thames in past centuries and today online I saw an old photo of 3 policemen skating on the Thames
I have a photo of me with my parents on the frozen River Ribble in 1947 I was on there again in 1963 (very cautiously) with my girlfriend in 1963. It's not a deep river(you can walk right across) and we got off quickly when the ice creaked.
I think we can all agree that under no circumstances should children ever venture on their own onto ice. Nevertheless many of us have marvelled at families etc happy skating on frozen ponds etc in the past
The fenskating is going on in Lincolshire. Not quite as dangerous because they know the water never gets over 2ft. But surely would be a struggle getting out of a 2' deep hole in the ice.
