Noises In The Night
39 Answers
Last night little Tigs went to bed but then whatsapped me just before 11 saying that he could hear creaking and carpet scraping noises and was scared. I went upstairs to assure him there was no one else in the house and that floorboards sometimes creak depending on fluctuating temperatures. I couldn't explain the carpet scraping noises....anyone know?

I think that one of my my most alarming moments in bed though was actually in the morning, when I lived in Sheffield. From time to time I would dream that I could hear someone coming up the stairs but I'd always wake up before they got up to my bedroom, so that I could breath a sigh of relief. However, on this occasion, I found myself dreaming that somebody was coming up the stairs, woke up and could still hear the footsteps!
My mate, knowing that I was a late riser and also that my neighbour had a spare key to my house, had borrowed that key and was bringing a freshly-made cup of tea up to me. He nearly got it thrown all over him for scaring the life out of me!

My house isn't old but it certainly creaks and makes odd noises in places, especially on a windy nights like last night. I would re-assure him that you'll investigate thoroughly if he hears anything again.
Sure this isn't your issue but when I was about 9 I kept telling my parents I could little feet running around in the loft at night. They dismissed it repeatedly as the imaginings of a child until they eventually heard it. Turned out to be rats up there.

I live in a block of flats...bedroom on the upper floor. Sometimes, just as I'm waking, I'll scratchy 'steps' over my head. It's always when it's light, but never later in the day. In fact...it seems to stop when I actually get up. But...I can lie in bed, eyes open and listening and hear it.
I've always assumed it to be seagulls or pigeons.
