Apparently it's because in it's early days the Guardian had lots of typos, just like answerin, Yer know.

The Guardian was well known for errors but other papers were equally guilty. There was a local paper that reported on an incident and wrote " This is being investigated by sergeant ---- who is a defective in the police force". The following week an apology was printed which ended with " The sergeant is, of course, a detective in the police farce".
