Enigmatic Variations 1590
30 Answers
Good morning, after a week-end of successful puzzling with the Jumbo Crosswords, the Sunday Times and Mephisto, my attention has come back to EV 1590. Thanks to the comprehensive hints from RickGDG, I’ve been able to make useful progress in getting to understand Charybdis psyche. The grid, with just a few empty cells, looks meaningful now. Hints to this final batch should facilitate the completion of the grid. Thanks in advance!

* Police force subject against back of post ( 2 words )
* Daphne’s family member a monster lizard
* Perfect fifth husband Leo I aim to spoil
* Cheek shaver ( Can’t see the double definition! )
* Feature renting a let † ( A feature of the word play? )
Angus’s first to enter Glaswegian joint-reluctant he’d say
( Can’t get the scots words for joint and reluctant to work!)
* Spy that girl’s burn in Ayr † ( LOOK/SEE/VIEW+ SHE/HER? )
* Publicly set up opening in special education
* It’s reckless moving right to near end of landing strip

Matakari, the link does respond if you go into the actual post itself, as if you were going to answer. I've just tried...

* Daphne etc. 5 letters. Kind of flower. A + a kind of ‘monster lizard’.
* Feature of renting a let. 4 letters, hidden in the clue. Obscure definition of a word meaning something to do with renting.
* Spy that girl’s burn in Ayr. 8 letters. 5 letter word for ‘spy’ plus HER gives a Scots term for burn.
* Publicly set up opening in special education. 8 letters. Word for ‘opening’ in S(pecial) ED(ucation) gives a loose synonym for publicly set up.
Keep at it!
Do you have access to a Chambers Dictionary? Worth getting the app if not in my opinion, I’d struggle with some of the obscure definitions and dialect terms without it.

Thanks, RickGDG, captain2, jj109, NACW, for the interesting parsing! I keep learning as always. Not much headway with :"Word for ‘opening’ in S(pecial) ED(ucation) gives a loose synonym for publicly set up"... I came up with "Decision", but that does not fit in my grid now. An answer would be appreciated. Just when I thought I had everything perfect, I notice some discrepancies: My ACROSS letters seem to be quite wrong. At 11a I have CTSDATP, 18a AH followed by AN?HASFAT, REO, MAG, ASA, SPOR?E?
Looking over the clues, I realise that these last two may have affected the outcome:
15 Surprised reactions off and on pathways: SPORADIC
16 72 gallons gross ( SIX DOZEN ) - a calculation that fits nowhere!
Your help will be appreciated for my continued edification.

Thank you very much for a great lesson! I think I understand Charybdis's setting technique much better now. I would be happy to have a shot at him again! Apart from the missing across word lengths and bars, it turned out to be a delight. The end game seems to suggest the middle of a planet...Something to toy with now.
Thanks again, all! NACW suggested I take a shot at the Listener, but I'm afraid maths is not my bag of tea! I much prefer the languages. Rick, I would be grateful to have the link for EV 1591 since it's easier than this one.

Matakari, the EV link was posted on Sunday, mid-morning. I'm glad you feel you understand Charybdis a bit better now - it augurs well for future puzzles.
PS I wouldn't describe the endgame as having to do with the middle of a planet.
PPS I didn't think maths was really your thing, but you seemed to have a veritable struggle with this EV!
