Many thanks to all who've taken the trouble to help, and apologies for delay in replying. I can see now why MILAN, VISTA, INVICTA, AUSTIN, & EAGLE are right, but still have no new letters for 9A or 2D.

I can't even find a word that is anywhere near satisfying for 2d

I thought the letter count was wrong too for 9 down. There is a US wheel company called Overman. ???

If it's Lubricate, it could be Oiling. The N is wrong but the G fits.

Eureka! Clue 1D is incorrect. The clue from which the L in 9A came was "Greek god of the sun", which is of course HELIOS. Thanks Captain2 for prompting me to reexamine - the Roman god of the sun is APOLLO, so the first letter of 9A is O, which means TheWinner's suggestion of OVERMAN is correct. 2D "Lubricant" is of course GREASE, and 12A which I thought might be SIGN is OMEN. Thank you everybody.
