No letters?
Is northey right in the clue
All I can come up with is SKEIN (as in geese in large numbers or a flock). Northey Island in Essex has a large population of Brent geese. I thought BRENT might have been a candidate for an answer, but just cannot parse it. I can't really parse SKEIN either but seek gives 3 letters SEK + IN from word in clue = SKEIN
Any other letters yet?
That's all I could come up with as well, last night, JohnT.

I was trying to work around a pattern such as ?LEE?
with the 1st and last being large numbers eg M,D,C,K etc
Maybe banking too much on using LEE as alternative word for shelter. Based on that TENT, HA HA, HIDE, HAVEN, HOME or many others might come into play.
No adjoining letters yet? or is ?LEE? what you actually have in the grid?
OR
The word SEEK with the letter L from large would give SLEEK (and you get to use LEE from shelter.
But what's all that got to do with Northey Island or geese - just doesn't make sense?
'No adjoining letters yet? or is ?LEE? what you actually have in the grid?'

I may have mislead you ^^^ there, JohnT. I'm not actually doing the crossword, just mulling over ideas for mazza's question.
