29. Live(r) ???
Question Author
Thanks TheWinner.
But how does that parse?
29, it's rector who is cut away from the Liver bird.
Just a guess. Fanciful bird, might be Liver (bird), and in motion, Live (on Air), Might not be right.
Question Author
Thanks Cillagoose and TheWinner.
Is there any way 32. could refer to (T. S.)ELIOT ? and his poem called The Hollow Men ???
I haven't got 32 yet.
But 2d, your H is wrong.
It's a straight clue. Yellow pigment (6) minus 'in' gives clay (4, obscure word to me)
no. 2 "might" refer to Kaolin or Kaol minus the "in" another guess. What a hard crossword!
32d 'sese' = 'enough said and 'cOllar' from the same poet needs 'a' inside.
...that's 'collar' as in seize.
LUTEin is the yellow pigment.
Question Author
You are right, Cillagoose.
2d is a synonymof clay.
Now my 13a is wrong. STAN?
38 An Americanism for 'allowing' = THO plus the respectful title U (straight clue).
35 'traiNed' - end of (movi)E+D [after] BR(itain).
Is there a clue for 13?
2 letters to lose from Be[hn] (h)AND = 'performer' (missing the 'h' from Aphra).
...and the first 2 letters for 13 = 'silence' (but not 'sh')
Question Author
Thanks ProfessorM.
Still a few reamin.
Any hints on 24d and 27d?

13. Quiet performer missing the essence of Aphra Behn (5) Stan?
24d [-2 letters] 'Fam[in]e' - 'becomes less intense'/tones down = M??e???e? remove the two 'e's from the synonym and read backwards.
27d ''Mark' as in a target/a soft touch - 'foolish be[gg]ing' 3 letters (youb can drink out of it) + letter of the alphabet (3 letters).
Question Author
Thanks ProfessorM.

Only two letters remain.
Third letter of 5d and first letter of 37a.

So far neither the misprints or consecutive pair lette make much sense. Some are missing. So back to reviewing everything.
5d 'burton' is an obscure synonym for TACK(L)E+D(iamonds) minus the 'L' of Liz (straight clue).
37a 'sab' = sob/Scots dialect - reverse it + Rep of Argentina (def 'City').
