For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Fleshpots... for some (many at times) of Doc's earlier puzzles, the lack of Brewer's wasn't crucial - solvers managed to get the unclued answers quite easily. It depended on the theme, some being more obvious than others. I think we had 'Green' once, and it was easy enough to spot Fingers, Man, Light and so on. This week's puzzle wasn't quite so simple.
This is very interesting. So to complete this puzzle, and the aforementioned clue in particular, Brewer's is essential, if as you say, the "milked" version is the only one named in it. Sounds a little in fair to the general solver, but then again the Speccy isn't really a general crossword. Lots to think about...
Fleshpots... the puzzle does say 'confirmed in Brewer's', so solvers know before they start, and I think many people could find a means of accessing that pr confirming their answers. The same applies to references to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, the ODQ feaures in quite a few thematic puzzles.
