Good evening, a very smooth Doc offering this week! I’m done except for the Unclueds. As I do not possess Brewer, I’m forced to use my wits and Google, as well as the red squares, to see how many of the capitalists I can discover.

Yes, many other people have had the same scenario, Matakari  - and it's perfectly doable... honest!

Have you got the red squares sorted?

That's a good reminder, Tilly. The red squares and the number mentioned in the title are likely to be a big help.

PS Matakari, didn't someone provide a link to Brewer's when you, or others, mentioned being 'disadvantaged'? You maybe saved that?

Find a couple of the nine that don't have any alternatives and google them....

34a Recitatives starting Scarletti compositions even (5) ?C?NE

scene ...why?

Question Author

Thanks! I've got the red squares and am toying with a few like:
1a H??????D, 5a D????S, 18a WH??E, 11d PR??????D
And, yes, NACW, good memory! A long time ago some of us were informed that a Brewer link existed, but not all of us got it.

Thanks, Matakari. You've gone astray with 5 A, both your letters are wrong.

The link to Brewer's has come up, been given on AB, a few times (over the past 15 years), I think I expected you to have jotted it down.

tedsgarn-  could it be Scena (although you have an E at the end) as that relates to recitative.

Is there an instruction about swapping letters (E for A)  then as the composer was scarlatti not scarletti, so scena becomes scene?

I can see the SCE from first letters, but not the rest.

34   - S (carlatti)  C (ompositions) +Ene. e'ne, a variation of 'even'.

Thanks. And I suppose scene is the English equivalent of the Italian music term scena

NMA, Scene is just the plural of Scena, recitative. It's from the Italian, but is in Chambers as an 'ordinary'  word, so didn't need more of a definition.

Again, thanks

THanks, NMA.  I enjoyed checking it out in Chambers today, I just stuck in the answer yesterday.

Thank you NACW

Thanks, tedsgran, glad I could help - and it's good for me to have to work out how a clue works!

26A Youngster central to 19, sadly (5). E???R. I don't have any of the unclued answers yet, so 19 isn't helping me.

The penny just dropped. Done and dusted!

I've finally found 'em! 13d was the catalyst. (Needn't have ordered the non-cheap Brewer's but at least I'll have it for next time :)

Although ironically I had 21d correct the whole time when I thought I was chasing capital roads.

I'm still clueless on the theme, so no spoilers, please, but I would like hints on a couple.

17a Author moving gently, dropping article (5) D???E

2d Twisted insult (5) ?o???

Thank you 😀
