I've Seen A Car I Like. Please Help!

It's a Toyota AYGO x-trend at a main Toyota dealer.  It's £10,995 cash and is 3 years old.  The MOT runs to June 2024, but the road tax ran out Sept 2023 - I don't get that?  What should I do?  Should I ask them, if I'm interested in purchasing it, if they could tax it for me and extend the MOT all in for what they're asking of £10,995?

I believe that cars generally no longer come taxed.  I would not purchase a car with only 5 months MOT for that kind of money, but it depends on how much you want it.

I’m pretty sure they will put a new MOT on the car for you to clinch the sale. Also ask about a warranty for six months.

How much is the tax?  The car doesn't need to be taxed if it is on private land.  The car dealer can use trade plates for test drives etc but it does suggest to me that the car has been up for sale since September.  Have you had full reports done to make sure it hasn't been in an accident?

I would insist on a new MOT and tax.

I would tell them that I wanted a full 12 months MOT before purchasing it.  As Redhelen says all cars come with no road tax these days you buy a new 6 or 12 months tax when you buy the car.

Apologies, RedHelen is correct.  As soon as any used vehicle is sold the tax is void so you must tax it before you drive it - it can quickly be done online.

There is no harm in asking the dealer for a discount of that amount, though.

In similar circumstances, the dealer taxed my used car purchase for six or twelve months, my choice, before leaving the dealership. Unfortunately I had to pay for it.

I paid £13.500 with three years warranty, and service plan, and of course a full MOT certificate. Good luck.

You need to haggle the price down and get a full years MOT plus full years warranty (parts and labour). Also bear in mind road tax will be £180 (petrol variants)

I thought you could only MOT a vehicle a maximum of one month before it is due? Also as others have said tax is never transferred now, you have to tax it in your own name once you buy it.

Trade is always going to be more expensive as you are suppose to have more 'safety' buying from a trader although we all know that is not always the truth

Just checked and you can MOT a vehicle earlier than due, but it then only lasts for the year whereas if done within a month of being due it lasts till a year from the due date ie up to 13 months.

It matters not a jot when you buy a car though, lankeela.  The buyer will get a 12 month MOT and not lose anything

That's not strictly true - it depends what date you tax the car as you pay for a whole month of tax, regardless of when you tax it .... so if you buy a car on the 28th of March for example, you'll pay for the whole of March (even though there's only 3 days left in that month) and another 11 months, so you'll only get 11  months and 3 days of tax.

My link identified about 200 Aygos x trend. Most if not all were cheaper, local to me (within 100 miles)

If that car was advertised for £10995, a dealer would expect a serious buyer to haggle that down by a serious amount AND get a fresh MOT and 12 months road fund included.

I just want to thank you all for your replies. It just shows how good it is to reach out and ask and ask and ask!

However, I had to spent £231 yesterday on my 17yo Citroen C1 (exhaust area) 🤷‍♂️ and, it's due its MOT beg. March.  I had to get it fixed as the exhaust was literally hanging off.  It's due its MOT in March so I'll have to get it to pass that and then I'll go round looking for a newer car. I can't keep paying out hundreds per year on my Citroen anymore,  especially as it's not worth a thing.

2nd hand cars are currently quite expensive.

if you only use your car for running around in and it's only costing 500 a year to fix I personally would keep your old one.

but wait until you see what the MOT throws up and then make your mind up. 
 

believe me there is no guarantee that you won't have to spend money on your new car
