Spectator N0. 2643 - Word Building By Doc

Good morning, after a somewhat harrowing experience with EV 1631, a very gentle Doc offering for which I solved all the clues in a flash! Just one shortcoming concerning the Unclueds in the top right hand corner (ITS) and the bottom left corner. I got UNSEX for 37a and am flummoxed by 35d: ?U?E
  Any help would be appreciated here, thanks!

(The unclued lights may be arranged to form a chain of words from three to eleven letters in length, each one being an anagram of its predecessor and one additional letter. One of these lights is hyphened. Elsewhere ignore an acute accent.)

Matakari - unsex cannot possibly be correct as the 6,7,8,9,10 and 11 letter words have neither a U or an X in them!

Matakari, I thought you'd need that easy Spectator after your 'tussle' with EV! I'm with JJ, I don't think there are definitive entries for the first two words in the chain - a shame. 

PS I don't know what made you choose Unsex!

Thanks, Matakari. We weren't to find the resting place of the MC, but of the 'object' - I don't know if you worked out what that one was?

I know that the only thing  missing from the MC was the lifeboat.

Matakari, you've to track down the resting place of another vessel! The theme is that the crew disappeared from the MC and also from a 'five...'.  It's the name of the second vessel that you've to find and highlight, and also to show its resting place. It took me only two or three minutes of research to find the details...

Thanks, Matakari. I know that it  was a gruelling experience all the way through- and right to the bitter end if I hadn't given you such a big final nudge! Still, you got to do the highlighting - and it sounds as if you enjoyed learning about the thematic stuff. I still don't think puzzles with missing or extra  letters and words are ever going to be your sort of thing!
