Struggling with a couple. 17a. I'll do a turn welcomed by king twice or character representing him . I have Ro--r. On the basis that 9d is teasel. Can't parse 16a.

Roger = ego reversed inside RR, and unknown to me Roger is abbreviated to R = character representing king

There isnt a 16a! Do you mean 16d?

16d Arrestee(one nicked in NewYork) = Arr(iving) + estee(M) (reputation slightly reduced)

Thanks. I just couldn't parse roger! Also my mistake the teasel was 9d

9d Teasel parses as

Teasel (dried flower head) = as (for example)"in" teel (sesame)

Many thanks.

I thought at first the GO may be from turn. RR from Kings said already..

No...prefer the EGO explanation, but I don't see the definition of Roger. Is he the setter? Does R or RR stand for Roger?

NMA, from Chambers... 'roger... a word used in signalling...for R in the sense of received and understood.'  I thought ' the king' gave us R, rex and  that R also represented Roger, so the 'character representing him'.

Yes forget my Roger as the setter as 'I' had already been used for EGO.

The position of twice suggests its only the R in King that's used twice.

I don't get where the Roger as in understood comes in...there's no okay orinderstood in the clue.

I'm still not sure of the definition... is it just 'him'?
