For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I'm against capital punishment but in favour of transparency - life should mean "life", not "19 years". The American formulation of "19 years to life" at least tells you what's happening.
As to whether you should get a longer sentence if you chop someone up into 224 pieces than if you don't, I think probably not: the sentence is for the murder, not for what happened later.
I'd be okay with it if he was really locked up for life, ymb. The idea of him being free again when he's only 47 isn't good.
While I agree it's not a crime of passion (not that this is a defence in this country anyway, at least not officially), it is in one sense: he killed his wife. Wife-killers aren't usually going to be a danger to the public at large.
