DT Herculis 02/01/06 Linked clue answer DOWN WASH
3 Answers
The official answer given for one of the linked clues for last week's Herculis puzzle which is given In today's DT (09/01/06) is DOWN WASH. I couldn't help pondering as to how many others entrants might also have submitted the equally valid (both are defined in the OED), and probably in more common usage, WASH DOWN; also if a solution with WASH DOWN had been first out of the hat would it have been declared the winner or automatically been rejected as incorrect? I wonder.

I think the Telegraph needs to get more to grips with there Crosswords, like all being sent to same address for different closing dates, and giving incorrect clues I sent an e-mail about the Butterfly clue 31/12 GK and got no reply to that but a long e-mail about how the books were wrong in the Christmas Dickens quiz. I think all Telegraph puzzlers should send e mails to telegraph every time like todays down wash.... Good Luck
Nigse - agree with your points though I thought it was DOWN WASH as I work with helicopters. I also wonder just how many of our entries actually make it to the office - then what happens to them - do they get recycled or just binned. Perhaps it could be done as an email like the Telegraph's Soduku - choose a possible winner - open and check it and if its not correct then open the next
