Thanks, Matakari. If you get stuck with the Unclued entries, there's loads of help been given here already....

Question Author

Good morning, I’ve reached the UNCLUED stage of this very tricky puzzle and seek confirmation for the following. What is the word? The AB thread suggests 4d, but I’m unsure as to the method to arrive at the answers. All help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

ACROSS:

12:  AA???TU   15:  A?L?   19:  AC?M?OST  35:  ADG?N?ST   40:  ?E?P   42:  AC???MO

DOWN:

2:  AB???TT   4:  AEE?L?PP   8:  E?O?   26:  CE?I?OTV   29:  ABE?RS   38:  ?E?S

Matakari, the Unclued entries can all be followed by Order. Some of them are pretty common - think of your bank statement for 35 A.

Your list is pretty long, I'll need to go back to my grid...

Your M is wrong in 42. The answer to 39 Is simply a strong wind, draught...

Matakari, all your other letters are correct. I hope you will enjoy the fun of forming words - and once you have got several, the CRIPPLING bit should help with the rest.

Question Author

Many thanks, NACW, I've got all the unlued words except four and am now toying with where to place the letters. The four that are still outstanding are the following:

19:  AC?M?OST

42:  AC???MO

2:  AB???TT

26:  CE?I?OTV

Matakari, I am happy to help. Have you scored off letters in the Crippling ... part? That should help enormously with the few that are left. Or do you want to be just given the answers?

PS Do you read the replies? I said earlier that your 42 A. had an incorrect letter.

Question Author

Thanks, NACW, I did read you and sorry about that slip. 42a reads AC???LO. I'd really like to have a go at filling in the Unclueds from the crippling part, but it keeps eluding me. If I got the answers for these last four words, I may be able to advance.

Thanks, Matakari. If you get given the answers to those four Unclued entries, wouldn't that be the puzzle finished off?

If you scored out all the letters you've used in the Unclueds , as per the preamble, from CRIPPLING... there really won't be a lot left! And as you've got eight of them, you'll know about the alphabetical order - so some of the Crippling... letters can be ruled out immediately.

I'm not being unhelpful, I'm just keen for you to do the finishing off, and get the satisfaction of that!

Question Author

Ok, I’ve got the following, but I’m unsure where the letters must go and that’s the little trick, I know.

ACROSS:

12:  AA???TU  ( NATURAL )

15:  A?L?          ( TALL )

19:  AC?M?OST

35:  ADG?N?ST  ( STANDING )

40:   ?EKP          ( KEEP )

42:  AC???LO

DOWN:

2:  AB???TT

4:  AEE?L?PP   ( APPLE PIE )

 8: E?O?        ( OPEN )

26: CE?I?OTV

29:  AB???RS   ( BANKERS ) EKN given by Abers…

38:  ?E?S        ( SIDE )

15a = Mail = ailm

40a = peck = cekp

All your others are correct

With the above corrections time to reassess the letters left in "crippling"

Matakari, at 1.25 you said 'I'm unsure where the letters must go and that's the little trick...' - I'd mentioned earlier that the entries were alphabetical!

Question Author

Thanks, jj109 and NACW, I've got it now except for two Unclueds for which I seek answers.
Gonfirmation for 26d: CELIYOTV ( VELOCITY )
And the missing letters for  42a: AC?I?LO

26d Eviction order = CEIINOTV

42a is logical order = ACGILLO
