Good day, help with the following would be much appreciated, thanks!

1a    Australian native's A$5, year's advance payment by quality (13, two words): ?????B??????R
    10a    Saw little in South Dakota (6) : ????D??

15a  Nick and people in general returning documents (5): ????S

    22a  Foolish, old, inept - somehow pursuing popular independence (9) : ???L?????
26a Half of monkey bread tree covered in coat of emulsion yielding rare wood (4) : ?E??????S

8d    Praise Scottish island after birdsong finished early (7) : ?E??V??
17d    Cuckoo clock department shelled (7) : ?O???I?

PREAMBLE: All clues either generate an extra letter of wordplay or are one letter short; in order, extra and missing letters spell a clue to the title of a 20th century classic (three words). In the completed grid highlight a thematic location (18 cells).

Matakari, you've erred in a few places.

Your B in 1 A is wrong.

17 D. Your I is wrong

8 D Both your letters are wrong

22 A Your L is wrong.

26 A  has four letters, as you've said - but then you show eight?

...and you're showing seven spaces for 10 A, but have said it's 6 letters?

Thanks, NACW! I left out some lines drawing my grid. I would appreciate the answers for this batch to see how far I can get.

1 A Spiny Anteater

10 Stadda

26 Ebon

8 Tribute

17 Cockled

Thanks for the great push, NACW!

Thanks, Matakari. Let us know how far you get - I might get round to tackling this one myself.

PS I thought you wouldn't go near this with all  extra and 'one letter short'  stuff!

Matakari, if you're looking in again...I am sure today's Spectator puzzle will lift your spirits.   I think you usually like La Jerezana's puzzles and this one is very Matakari-friendly!

Question Author

Good afternoon,NACW, yes a smooth and enjoyable La Jerezana today! Got the theme very early and everything just flowed. Hoping the weekend will be as kind!

Thanks, Matakari. I saw your earlier post, thread on today's Spectator. Yes, it was 'smooth' but for me  it was only briefly 'enjoyable' - it was very easy, with a theme  that was pretty obvious. (I got that from my first glance at the title!) Still, there was no Brewer's involved, that's something.

PS Sunday's EV was an example of an excellent thematic puzzle. Yes, it had 30+ extra words, but it had the right mixture of challenge and fun.

Question Author

Thanks, NACW! I hope this week's EV will be a Matakari-friendly one. In any case, I'll have much to look forward to, the football clash Spain/England ( Spain should take it easily!) and the Bastille celebrations.

Matakari, I hope you look in again this afternoon. You got your wish - I'd say it's a very Matakari-friendly EV! There are plenty of straightforward clues, no extra words or letters and the thematic stuff, relocating letters, doesn't need to be tackled until much of the grid is filled.
