Christmas In The Good Old Days

A friend just had a narrow escape when a wheel on his camper van came loose. It could easily have come off with disastrous consequences. He had had the vehicle checked over by a local independent garage before setting out - they said it was fine.
Now I would have thought that checking the wheel nuts (torque) should be a basic requirement - tyre fitters recommend they are re-checked after 100 miles on new tyres - but looking at itemised check lists on-line from AA / RAC /Halfords / KwikFit NONE mentions checking the wheel nuts!
I'm amazed!
