She was a nymph really but some sources say she was a siren ..but I think circle is your answer
Put left in( L ) to stop her ( Circe )..giving circle which in this sense means company you are in....circle of friends for example

I agree about the circle of friends being company so it must be right.
Apparently there were three Sirens viz. Pisnoe, Aglaope and Thelxiepia (though different sources give differing numbers varying between two and four). They were half bird and half woman and when Ulysses did not succumb to their music they died. Circe lived on another island, had different parentage and was a witch.

In an old episode of Batman (1966) played by Joan Collins there is a character called Circe , also known as The Siren ----- but I doubt that that would be erudite enough for the FT !
