Will I affect my partner
2 Answers
I have in brief an appaling credit record - I was reckless as a student and have lived in rented accomodation ever since and therefore moved approx once a year.
I dont have much credit and when I have applied have been turned down.
I am better now and live with the money I have - have no interest in credit cards or debt I cant manage.
The problem is that I am about to move in with my boyfriend who is excellent with money and based on what he has seen of me thinks I am too.
He owns a house and has never been turned down for credit and I am worried I will affect his credit and would hate this.
My questions are:
What can I do to limit my affect on him?
Will living with him help my credit rating?
Would I be accepted to join him on his mortgage - he has made all his payments on time and we would like my name on there but again only if this doesnt affect him?
All the bills and everything are in his name and as I have no credit cards etc I would happily just go on the electoral role and not apply for anything is this would help.
Please any advise needed.

If you have any joint finances at all (mortgage, current account etc) then his credit record will be linked to yours and your adverse info will affect him. It is quite likely that you would not be able to get joint credit anyway, in view of your bad record.
2. Your credit record will only improve if you pay off all your debts in full, or after 6 years has gone by from the time your last default occurred (CRA entries are deleted after 6 years).
3. If you wish to try and avoid your creditors contacting you (I assume they don't know where you are at present), you should not go on the electoral roll.
4. Think long and hard about the best thing to do. I get the impression you haven't told your boy friend about the debts. It might be best to do so now, rather than risk him finding out later.

Please do yourself a favour and tell your boyfriend - if you don't it will come back and bite you in the backside.
His credit rating will not be too badly affected by you to be honest - and you may find yours improves once you are financially linked.
Its also worth noting that its not just 'normal' finances that link you - putting the electric or gas bill in dual names will link you.
