Getting Around Regional Lock-out Codes
The DVD on my computer is only able to play Region 2 DVD's, and because it's a hybrid installation, I have no clue about the brand so can't download unlocking codes. I want to buy a USB2.0 Fireware External DVD Drive, but do not know if this item will enable me to play DVD's from any and all regions without first downloading unlocking codes. In the alternative, it was suggested that I buy an external DVD Reader, but I have no clue what Readers do or if that will solve the problem. All I want to do (just like everyone else, I suppose) is watch DVD's from any Region on my computer without having to go through huge complicated technological hoops.

It seems far easier to buy a cheap 25 multi region dvd player for your tv - but that is not what you want.
I wonder if something like this would be the answer:
http://www.allcam.biz/products/ptdvd.html
Could it be hooked up to your laptop for playback?

Thanks Llamatron for the tip about the DVD Region+CSS alternative to getting around the lock out feature on DVD's. I downloaded the free trial version of the software right after I read your suggestion. It took only two minutes to download and three minutes later I was watching a Region One DVD on my computer! The software actually works and I will definitely be buying it after my trial period ends. (I discovered that buying an external DVD Drive doesn't work because you still get locked out after changing codes five times.)
