Beginner on Cryptic Crossword, the Sun

Well after my post yesterday about how to go about completing these things ive been looking at yesterdays Sun crossword. ive managed a few actually, which suprised me. and others ive managed to get the answers but dont know how they relate to the clue. Hope you dont mind helping a beginner, ive been looking at the other posts and i feel a bit silly posting for these cuz i bet everyone can get them in seconds, but here goes...

Some dour gentlemans strong desire (4)

Burning land (6)

King, eg, using tennis area with amusing person (5,4) i got court for the tennis area but dont know the rest

Reserves turning up with gift now (2,7) got at present for this but cant understand where it all fits in.

Getting to royal fellows man teased (9) got tormented, but again dont know how.

Domestic animal eating seconds? Thats a nuisance (4)

Impediment for hothead with skin irritation (5)

I know theres a few here but im really determined to learn these bl***y things and its only practice i guess. Please if possible can you include the explainations so i understand where the anwers come from. Thanks in advance!!!

last one looks like HITCH
HOT HEAD - i.e the head or first letter of HOT = H
skin irritaion = itch
impediment = HITCH

if it has some in the clue it normally means its hidden in the line

Domestic animal eating seconds? Thats a nuisance. What has a domestic animal and eating seconds got to do with getting the answer?

Reserves are the TA ..turning up means reversing

AT + present (gift) = now

Domestic animal is a pet. If it eats seconds (s) it becomes
a PEST (nuisance)

Theme....Article is THE... + ME= theme ( subject)

Well done for trying to do cryptic crosswords - source of fun , frustration and satisfaction all in one . The last one you didn't understand is the 'reserves' , common abbreviation is TA for Territorial Army . Loads of abbr. used in cryptic crosswords , also roman numerals . Stick with it and you'll get there . Loads of help from the people on this site . Regards and good luck

one of the best ways to learn cryptic crosswords is to do yesterdays - today ! after having a go fill in the answers and then re read the question. when you compare them together it will give you a good idea of what to look for in the future.
