johnalex I must be very thick as i cannot get the smilies to work as you suggested. I am using a lap top. And can you tell me why my name comes up in green ?

Hi Setoda - The number pad on your Laptop shares the following keys:

7 8 9
U I O
J K L
M

These represent 0123456789 ascending from your space bar and are printed on the keys half-size in a contrasting colour.

Press Fn (Function key) & NumLK (Number lock) together.
Now press J,K,L and you should get 1,2,3. Now you can press Alt 1 (Alt J) for Smiley ☺, Alt 11 (Alt JJ) for ♂ and so on. If you get the hang of this it will definitely work.

Don't forget to press Fn + NumLK to switch off the keypad.
NumLK may share your 'Ins' Key (Insert) depending on manufacturer.

Let us know how you get on. By the way, your name is in GREEN because you're a New Member but this should change automatically after 2 weeks (I think!).
