Basically you have two major theories of old- the 'analytical school' stemming from Freud, Jung, etc believed that to make a person be less ill to reduce symptoms, you had to explore their innermost psychological recesses- thus they would prescribe analysis.
Skinner and other behaviorists believed that all behavior was a result of rewards and punishments and their interventions would be 'behavioral' in nature. So- a hyperactive child might, be assigned psychoanalysis or a behavior modification treatment plan.
Today- an offshoot of the latter is CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- where though analysis is rare- there are many who still stand by the 'talking cure of the former.
