dt codeword

i guess this more or less comes into the category of crosswords. today's dt codeword has the letter "w" in square 19 (it's used just the once) and the letter "x" in square 2 (ditto). the word with the "w" has eight letters, the "w" being the second last. but the last letter is the first .letter of a four-letter word ending in "x". for the life of me, i cannot work out either. any thoughts, anyone>

alas, the second letter of the eight-letter word has got to be the same as the last letter. so, fishbowl won't do. but thanks, anyway.

Are you sure about the second letter? Someone on quizzes and puzzles says the answers are pubcrawl and lynx!

i could be wrong. i'm working off a photocopy and maybe i've misread it. tks for the tip.

sincnoel, the second and last letters are not the same.

The numbers are 26 for the second letter and 25 for the last. So "pubcrawl" and "lynx" are correct.

They must be right because to my knowledge my wife hasn't been wrong since the summer of 1961, when she thought she'd made a mistake.
