appreciate kayakamina you pointing out the words were in reverse, I'm new to the Times (first time I have tried their crosswords) so yet to figure out thinking

A good indicator of a reversed solution in the clue is if you see the word 'back' , 'up' or in the case of a down clue 'going north'
