Hi cruciverbali, if you have a minute,
please. I've got a couple unanswered that I just can't get.
Etude, say, may be cut without a show of hesitation (8)
and
Old time French composer (10)
- - - - - - e - p -

(always supposing that I've got the right letters in from other answers!)

Thanks and all the best wishes,
Neutron

I shall have a think about these Neutron- certainly no obvious answers are springing out just yet. More letters would of course be helpful - are there any others available from cross-checking entries ?

Cruciverbalist
Your composer could be Vieuxtemps..which means Vieux(old) and Temps (time)
Henri Vieuxtemps..although he was was born in Belgium ..violinist and composer .
Spot on ShaneyStar ! The 'French' refers to the wordplay of course, and not his nationality

Great, shaneystar2, that fits perfectly
and gives help with the other one.

Thank you cruciverbalist, and the other one is now:
- x - - - - - -

so it isn't an anagram of 'etude say' which I'd thought it might be though I could not find a word from it that fitted.
excision, perhaps, but I can't see how that
works.

Anyway, thanks a bunch, shaneystar2 and ,
cruciverbalist,
All the best
Neutron
Exercise...an etude is a study or practice piece ...an exercise

Excise ...to cut +er =hesitation
Question Author
Thanks so much shaneystar2, for your help and explanation.
Quite often I can't work out why something is right, as I'm still trying to learn how to do cryptic xwords and they need a different way of thinking about the clues, don't they. (I usually go for general knowledge ones.)
Thanks again,
Neutron
