Remember that a lappy is a lappy
within a priceband - they all do pretty much the same basic things
you main concern is set a budget ..... and don't be tempted to stray more than a few s.
In very general terms
a 400 lappy will have pretty much the same facilities whatever the make
(that doesn't mean they are all as good as each other - nip down to your local supermarket ... look at a few PC mags ... see which they recommend in your price range and you won't go too far wrong)
don't discount aldi or tesco ... they have some excellent deals
the basic rules ... (more half truths)
RAM -
at the mo 2Gb is the most (ish) that 32 bit vista can access(not true ... 2814Mb actually - but let's not)
look for 1-2Gb ram
Hard disc .... I think the largest available (without being silly)is 160Gb
so 80-160Gb isgood .... do you want to store music or movies? if yes ... bigger is better
widescreen? - up to you
the rest
will look after itself
finally - look for free extras ... a free bag or memory stick is always icing on the cake

There are two manufacturers of processorsIntel and AMD a Turion is a mobile version of AMD and it's very good I have a laptop with this processor.Dual core means two processors that work togheter to improve performance .
You don't need blue tooth unless you have some device that nneds to use it to connect to a PC and in any case adaptors are just a few quid if you change your mind
Minimum soec I owuld go for AMD or intel 1.6ghz or better dual core if poss though not essential
1Gb RAM
At least 2 USB ports
Minimum 80Gbhard drive
Wireless buiit in-you will need this if not now in the future

Thanks Fiesata,
Having checked out all the above helps, The one I like has this processer
Output 1 VGA port, 1 RJ11 modem connector, 1 RJ45 internet connector, S-video TV out, 1 headphones-out, 1 mic-in, 1 IEEE 1394, remote control infrared port (remote optional), cable docking connector
Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 mobile
Processor Cache L2 cache 512Kb
Processor Features Up to 1600 MHz system bus running at AC/DC mode 31 watt
Does all of that sound OK I know one of you recommeded an AMD Turion this is Athlon.
ALso to check SKy Broadband I need an Ethernet port, what is this? Is it the same as WI-FI?
