Sonic Repellent for Spiders
14 Answers
I've had at least 4 absolutely massive spiders running around in my house,in the last 2 weeks, and as a complete arachnaphobe,my nerves are in shreds here :-( It's always happened when I've been on my own too,and my neighbour has had to come in and remove them! I'm really thinking of trying one of those sonic repellents, but,I wondered had anyone any personal knowledge that they are genuinely effective? I'll put a link for the type of thing I meanhttp://www.primrose-london.co.uk/spider-repell er-whole-house-p-1277.html?gclid=CJa00t7F2Y4CF Q0eEgodOCjhAw&r=GOOG

I had the same problem in my flat until I used conkers, and (fingers crossed) haven't seen any of the big blighters since.
And best of all, at this time of year, it's free!

Hi lindapinda
I have been having the same problem with enormous spiders for a few weeks now.I mean, they are the biggest I have ever seen in my life.
I have one of those plug in sonic things but they do NOT work.
I spoke with a colleague a couple of weeks ago from the Environmental Health and he told me the best way was to get a stiff hard brush and use it around every window frame in the house.
It seems that is where the eggs are laid.
After you do this, spray round all the windows inside and out with insect repellent.
I have not seen a spider since I did that. I too have a terrible fear of the things!! lol.

Hi Cruella! So you're another scaredy cat like me lol Thanks for that on the repeller. Does it make any difference if you have double glazed windows?I thought they couldn't get in through them? What exact insect repellent did you use btw? I've been out looking for conkers this afternoon, and I've now got as many of them as I could find,at the doors and skirting boards,as Delboy suggested!
At this time of year, isn't it the males coming in to find the females - and they are larger than the females. (I may be wrong of course.) I've had 2 huge blighters in recently - wondered whether the mild winters mean they survive to get mutantly large?! If they are males, I don't see how wiping a few sills will help. I can only think to make sure you clean behind all your furniture and corners so there are no females hiding in webs. Also the daddy long legs spindly spiders (I call them dancing spiders) can trap and eat house spiders so if you can stand them, leave them be. One of my 2 monsters was stuck in a dancing spider's web the other day - but he was only a tiddler so had to leave the monster hanging, stuck, until my husband came home and let him go outside.
Hi lindapinda
I used Raid, but the repellents that you get to spray your house for dog or cat fleas also works.
The guy from the Environmental Health who deals with this sort of problem evey day, said window sills outside an underneath are where the eggs are laid, hence the stiff brush to brush them down first.I have double glazing too.

Thanx for all your replies! I'll be trying the insect repellent and scrubbing the sills, along with the conkers. I understand that my inability to just put them outside,is weird to some, but,I developed a phobia as a small child, and these particular spiders(even hate to write the word!) were unusually massive !! *shudders*
spider stop fro kleeneze or betterware works also spider away from some hardware stores.i have also heard if you buy some citronella and add to an oil burner those tea loight thingys apparently spiders and insects dont like the smell i think its an orangy smell.the spider stop spray smells lovely.good luck i cannot stand them.but if you spray round the bottom of the doors and round the windows and the plug holes at night time you will get less.
