Squealing When Turning

I am driving an R reg Astra at the moment and whenever I go round a corner such as a 90 degree turn or a roundabout there is a squealing which to all intents an purposes sounds like a wheel spin (and which I assume it is!)

I am not a fast driver in the slightest and have never had this before with a car so I guess the problem is with the car and not the driving.

It also skidded with me once which I have a feeling may be linked.

The car passed an MOT only 3 weeks ago and the brakes were checked.

Any ideas what could be wrong or what I could do to stop this?

I think that I've probably experienced that squeal on every car I've ever owned. In every case it's turned out to be a worn wheel bearing. (It can sometimes reach the 'squeal' stage before failing an MoT).

Fortunately, it's one of the less expensive repairs which cars require. A local garage should be able to fix it for well under �100.

Does it have power stearing it could be the drive belt to the power stearing pump in loose. This may be an easy DIY job or a low price job for any garage, I might even trust Quick Fit with it, a new belt may be needed, possible the other drive belts as well if they have to come off as well, only �5- 10 each.

The squeal appears to be coming from behind me rather than in front of me so the wheel bearing sounds the more likely. However it does come from both sides but I hear it more from a right turn as, all roundabouts are right turn naturally.

To me it sounds like a wheel spin, like the tyre isn't gripping the road properly - it has good treaded tyres so could the bearing be to blame???

I still think it is the belt as that makes a squeel noise, a wheel bearing would be either a wum-wum sound or a rumble like a bike wheel, sounds can seam to come from different places in a car. A garage would soon be able to find out what it is.

Your rear brakes might be seizing, therefore locking the wheels at angles due to camber.

Are they discs or drums? Check your handbrake see if it feels free or loose, other than that it probably would be your bearings, but to have two go at the same time is unusual.
