yes, exactly!! its a cryptic crossword in todays guardian and thats the last clue. the answer is X plus Y equals - so am just missing the last letter which will be the answer to the equation!!!!
I have the same problem!

Do these facts help:

X = 10 (Roman)
Y = Yttrium, atomic number = 39
F = fluorine, atomic number =9
F is also Roman = 40

Z is the symbol to represent atomic number in chemistry

So with all that, what is X plus Y equal to?
... and the answer to clue F is forty nine which equals 10 + 39 or 9 + 40
So the final answer to the clue is:

X PLUS Y EQUALS F

10 + 39 = forty nine

.... but Z=F
so X+Y could =Z????
Surely the answer is X plus Y equals Z: the reference to the 'F' solution confirms that 10+39 is the sum involved here.
I agree with you. It's Z, not F. I overcomplicated things.
