I've often wondered too. I imagine it depends on the attitude of the individual journals. Most will supply a copy of their rules and it would be worth checking for the crossword(s) you do. I dread to think of all the stamp and envelope money I've spent (to no avail on anything other than local crosswords).

At the risk of stating the obvious, work on a copy (if you can) or lightly in pencil before committing it to ink.

A very happy New Year to you too!
I am not sure either but in the days when I did use tippex I never, ever won!! I now work 'in pencil' as they used to say at school and then ink over. I read that one of your other responders does the same, OK? Happy New Year to you!
won the runners up prize of 25.00 three weeks ago but dont know if i tip ex any out could have as my wife dives into the answers and always makes a mistake but i always tip ex very light and the answers look good

not sure what the rule is these days but back when i began doing the prize crosswords (many years ago) it used to be stated that grids which were incomplete, illegible or altered would be disqualified
Lovatts puzzles accept entries that use whiteout materials! But they DO state it on their entry forms. ALWAYS check rules so you dont waste te and money.
I construct the puzzle grid on a spreadsheet and fill it in as I go. Any mistakes are easily corrected and then all that remains is to copy it carefully onto the original printed grid..
Spreadsheet can be saved, which avoids the need for a photocopy.
