5d Reason for losing heart when odd character appears (4) C?S?

I assume the answer is CASE (Reason = Cause losing heart, so CASE, but what's the odd character? As in 'he's a right case'? Surely not.

Chambers gives this def:an odd or humorous character, usually qualified in some way as in "he's a strange case" (colloq). I'm sure you're spot on with you answer.
I think so..one of the definitions of CASE in Chambers is .."an odd or humorous character"

And I had forgotten to check in the Chambers I got for Christmas after much hinting. Thank you both.
And I should imagine case, in that sense, is just a short form of nutcase?
