16a Foul on goalkeeper? - more or less (7) N - I - - - E. noisome ? Is there a goalkeeper called Noi ?

Possibly I didn't explain myself properly!

A Hawk is a Tornado aircraft. TOR (hill) + and o(old) (ruined) = Tor nado

You bail (bale) water from a boat to level it and you lodge Bail so you don't see the inside (of jail)

K, you've explained it all perfectly. I'm just unhappy about 'half-seen between', and am not entirely convinced a hawk and a tornado are the same thing, although both are military aircraft.

When I hold my little crossword 'workshops' I stress to the students that in a well constructed clue, in a quality crossword, EVERY word within the clue is important.

Sorry to disagree, but I believe 7dn is "Torpedo".

Tor = hill

O =old

Ped = half of "peddle, which means to "hawk".

I should have added that to "torpedo" something is to "destroy" it - at least according to Chambers dictionary.

vt to attack, strike, destroy, by torpedo; to wreck (eg a plan).

Arizona briefly is AZ. And all the letters of the alphabet are housed between A and Z
