used car problems!!

ten days after buying a used car and paying cash i took it to a garage to get it looked at as a light come on. they told me that it had been damaged repared and the mechanical problems have prob a result of the damage. they would not touch the car further and advised me to contact the man i bought it of. he had advertised it in a well known car mag and had advertised as a trader. he has agreed to buy the car back if there is notting wrong with it, but should i be out more money to fix it when it was not my fault?? i had asked him had the car been damaged before as the bumper was loose and he had said NO which he has lied. so can anyone advise on my legal position??
