Regarding ambiguous coordinates, I agree that exam might have moved to the other end of 11 across, being the definition, but can't see how listener's or up could move right whilst still maintaining the correct wordplay - have I missed something here ?

i see now how you did it Mr Crossy - i couldnt get the movements before the theme because i had a few coordinates wrong - as mentioned above.
It wasn't until i got the theme and the movements are self-explanatory i could work backwards and correct my mistakes
i also thought of that theme originally
Mysterons: Listener's could go to the end and the wordplay would still be in order. Also I had "up" as a synonym for the last three letters of the answer and "stylish" meaning an anagram, because i had never heard of the alternative meaning of this word.

It's fascinating how we've come to the solution of this one from various different angles. One thing you can be sure, Mango always produce a fair puzzle with a great mathematical slant. Regarding the wordplay of 1 down, grabbing usually indicates something is sandwiched (in this case SW), so listener's would be unable to shift whilst maintaining the correct wordplay.
