OR (soldiers) BIT ( Half of bitter (resentful)
soldiers = OR (other ranks) + resentful = bitter, not half, = bit
And OR are Other Ranks (soldiers)
Good morning K - needless to say, I was still faffing about typing after you'd come up with the answer!
We seem to be treading on each others toes lately so, as this was a military question, what about us adopting a strict routine- You take the odd ones and i'll do the evens?

Many thanks, all, for explaining the military term! So where does that leave me with 21d: Chatter that's not quiet making one upset. I have _A_T_E. So RATTLE or TATTLE.... but which and why? Thanks in anticipation!
Chatter is prattle, remove the p (quiet) for rattle.
