Just about completed grid with exception of the two unclued words and reference to another word. Can't understand preamble but might help if you could confirm that 39a (no clue given - 8) is INERMOUS and maybe give a hint, crptic or otherwise, as to what puzzle is about.
The three words you should discover are formed by letters not in the grid. They have a common meaning. The unclued entry at 1a, which is a non word, when looked at is a cryptic version of a well known four letter phrase, to do with thinking from a new perspective, which could describe the position of the three words.
Tichfield, thanks to your hint I have at least been able to complete one crossword this week, unlike this weeks listener and ev, which I just couldn't get into.
I have finished the crossword (apart from 1across), got the 3 words in their positions, but cannot figure out the the non-word nor the "puzzler's maxim".
Any assistance appreciated!!!
The entry at 1a consists of the letters of INERMOUS aranged so that it is one 4-letter word inside another and may be said to cryptically represent a 4-word phrase meaning to approach an issue from an unconventional angle.
It might be slightly misleading to say it is a puzzler's maxim as I often associate it with the world of business.
