why does it go back to front (hebrew too??? i fink). Don't it smudge. Was that the default way before cyrillic came along and spoiled it?

Oh yes, fink is not a word. I belive you meant "think" and the Cyrillic alphabet is named after St. Cyril, a missionary from Byzantium. It was invented sometime during the 10th century AD, possibly by St. Kliment of Ohrid.

some Greek inscriptions go left to right on one line then right to left on the next. It's called boustrephodon, which is the way an ox ploughs a field. L to R is just a convention, not a law
