I thought it was just a girl's name but checking I see it is not in Chambers.

The female American marathon record holder (that sounds garbled) goes by that name. That was one of my quibbles - I feel that first names should be confirmed by Chambers.

As well as 8d not being in Chambers, the definition in 15a is wrong. It is not an insect. Still an enjoyable and relatively simple crossword.

I agree this was basically striaghtforward but I don't understand how the 'political' message explains the nature of the crossword. I'm still working on the odd letter of the message but I still can't see its relevance.

I took longer to get the message than I should have done but still don't really see the point of it. The crossword is soluble without it.

I agree. I was initially looking for rather more than was required.

Maybe "suggests the nature of the thematic entries" (or something like it) would have worked better?
