It could be "Merman," but it could also be "Seaman." Although the word sea is already given in the clue, so I suppose the latter is less likely.

Why "far from generous"?

No, "Bitter" seems fine. I don't have either of the two downwards words that cross its path. And the first "t" makes sense with what I've got of 5d.
