Sadly my employer is rather old-fashioned, and I'm not allowed to drink in the office, so the hugely pleasurable combination of boozing and solving (plus the odd cigar at the conservatory door) has to be confined to home.
Enjoyed this a lot, especially as I hadn't come across this particular game before. One minor gripe, the preamble should read left to right, top to bottom, nottop to bottom, left to right.
I can only see two words that can fit in 15 and one of those is used elsewhere and the other has no relevance to the clue. I'd assumed that the answer was a hidden, but it's obviously not.
For 22, I can only find one word, which has something to do with buildings, but I can't see how to get it. Also, I don't end up with the expected letters unchecked.
Took a while to tidy up the middle bit around 21/22 but pleased to get there in the end. Agree with you Mysterons, very enjoyable but that preamble wording is a slight let-down.
However, overall a first class puzzle with some (for me anyway) interestingly different / new words included.
Thanks Bero
Thanks Mysterons. I should have looked up the meaning of the word "vocalically" (though that's not actually in Chambers) as the answer was pretty obvious when I did. Really don't like "building" as an anagrind either, but at least I got there in the end :)
I know I hit upon a couple of previously (to me) unknown words/phrases in this Listener, but outside of the crossword itself I have to say I was flummoxed purely within this thread by 'anagrind'.
Never seen it before, but presume it means anagram indicator?
Have I had my head buried in the sand or something even denser for too long?
You aren't the first to have asked this cluelessJoe - see this recent thread. It might be interesting to do a Balderdash & Piffle to establish just when this portmanteau word first appeared.
