I have finished the puzzle but I could not verify the unclued lights using my copy of Brewer, as per the preamble - 15th Edition 1995.

Maybe I was not looking up the entries properly?

1ac and 23ac?????

Do you mean 4ac and 25ac?
Possibly I'm wrong then.

I don't have access to the Brewer and relied on Google.

4a (I think I said 1) AESCULAPIUS with 17d COLCHIS
I cut myself off!

37a DIANA with 33d DODONA

23a JUPITER with 22d EPIDAURUS

Feel free to shoot me down!
Tichfield - look under 'oracle'

kakakamina - sorry your matching is wrong. Brewer's is avaliable on-line:

http://www.bibliomania.com/

Select 'research' then 'reference'.
kayakamina - sorry, I spelt your name incorrectly in my last post.
Thanks GRM I shouldn't have stuck my big foot in !

I had

AESCULAPIUS
MARS
JUPITER
DIANA

and

EPIDAURUS
THRACE
COLCHIS
DODONA

But I was unable to link them - not that that really matters.
Hi again GRM. It's just struck me that the actual pairings may not be important provided the unclued ones are highlighted.

Thanks for that link GRM - very useful.

"Hi again GRM. It's just struck me that the actual pairings may not be important provided the unclued ones are highlighted."

They're not and the preamble doesn't call for any highlighting but it's nice to get things correct and verifiable.

The entries in Brewer for the individual gods indicate that they were Roman not Greek but if you look under 'oracle' all becomes clear and the title is explained and justified. In fact I thought the title to be rather good.
