MSN toolbar & live messenger

I've just set up a new laptop running win vista and installed msn toolbar and live messenger. But niether the toolbar or win live messenger displays new emails recieved if you know what i mean. (the little envelope, that has a number of emails in brackets) they both show on the desktop running xp

is there a setting that needs to be alterd to show this?
